No breakthrough in rubbish dispute

Prospects of an end to the strike by binmen and roadsweepers in Adeje receded last night as a meeting called by the company ended without progress.

Adeje - 26.03.2008 - The firm, which holds the tender for refuse collection in the town (including Playa de Las Américas and neighbouring resorts), says the workers have not budged on their initial demands for wage increases and it has little room for manoeuvre given that the tender cannot be renegotiated. It stressed that any talks would have to contemplate a long-term deal over at least five years but not an immediate pay rise, which could encourage strike action again in future. The strike has been running for over a week and is damaging Adeje's tourism reputation.
