Rubbish action begins to bite

The council in Adeje (Tenerife) has asked residents and visitors to cooperate to keep rubbish to a minimum as the strike by a local refuse firm began on Monday.

Adeje - 18.03.2008 - Binmen and roadsweepers working for the company, which holds the tender for the services in the town, walked out after pay negotiations broke down again. Adeje has set up a number of temporary sites for people to take their rubbish to instead of leaving it on the streets every night. Householders and businesses have been urged not to take bulky appliances out for collection during the coming days. The strike could last for weeks due to the irreconcilable positions of the two sides. A council spokesman admitted the situation was of grave concern as the busy Easter week-end apparoaches and hotels fill up.
